Winter is coming. Get your skin in shape.

You already know this is for you! As the weather gets colder the conditions for our skin get harsher. We all go through it and it’s awful.

Dry and cracked skin. Redness and breakouts. Every winter.

The combination of cold temperatures outside and heat blasting indoors can be harrowing for the skin. Cracking, redness, and flaking are some of the conditions you could be experiencing during the winter season. In some cases, the skin can even become inflamed causing harsh pain which could lead to long-lasting issues.

Luckily there are a few things that can help with keeping your skin healthy during the winter. Using cloth facemasks and moisturizing gloves can ease the pain that regular lotion can’t. Yes, you read right, facemasks not only help with the pandemic but also help keep your skin moist by shielding it from outside conditions and trapping your own moisture.

1.Take extra care

Winter is a harsh time for your skin. If you have sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or psoriasis be extra careful to avoid any irritants or allergens that you know flare your condition. Using a richer or more soothing moisturizer can help balance things out

2. Tweak your routine

Switch your exfoliants and moisturizers if they contain a lot of ingredients that dry out such as salicylic or glycolic acid and switch to combinations that hydrate and moisturize more. Make sure to tone and moisturize quickly after exfoliating and cleansing to minimize further dehydration.

3. Keep your home moist

Humidifiers are a great investment for the winter. They counter the drying effects of indoor heaters and the added moisture. Let them run at night as well as they will moisturize the air, cause less irritation for your lungs and nose and help with breathing.

4. Drink more water

Hydrated skin is always a good thing and staying hydrated helps on many levels. Especially in winter with dry air around us, there is considerable insensible fluid loss and drinking water helps replenish lost water.

5. Slow down on warm water

The cold weather makes hot showers and baths tempting but you should limit the amount you spend under the warm water. Hot showers and baths will lead to an increase in water loss and lead to more irritated and dry skin. After every shower or bath make sure to apply moisturizer shortly after to prevent further dehydration. Bath oils are are a great way to add moisture, nourish and protect your skin.

6. Get the right lip balm

Lips are some of the hardest-hit areas in winter. The combination of saliva that slowly dehydrates and cold and dry air will easily lead to cracking and flaking - a condition sometimes referred to as ‘lick eczema’. Be careful when choosing your lip balm. We recommend unscented neutral lip balms without taste.  Flavorful lip balms can lead to increased licking and saliva production and ultimately cause more harm than do good.

7. Use sunscreen

Contrary to popular belief, sunscreen isn’t solely for summertime and the beach. Especially when participating in winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, or other outdoor activities the reflecting off snow means UV and sunburn can occur. Applying sunscreen or using a moisturizer with SPF will protect your skin from worsening conditions.

8. Get a facial

The skin moves through a full cycle of skin cell growth in about four weeks. Booking a professional peel every four to six weeks will help remove superficial cell debris and dead cells and allow for better absorption of active topical skincare. Consider our hydra boost infusion facial, which will increase hydration and lock in moisture using hyaluronic acid.

9 . Go the extra mile with professional skin treatments

Winter is a great time for skin treatments. In the summertime, there is always the added risk of unwanted side effects due to pigmentation changes, especially after laser and peel treatments. Winter presents an opportunity. Inside Beauty offers micro-needling, laser, and peels for great resurfacing options. Give us a call or book a consultation to see what might be best for you.
