Does Insurance Cover Rhinoplasty?

Insurance may cover some of the functional aspects of rhinoplasty — those procedures that improve breathing:

  • opening sinus drainage pathways (endoscopic sinus surgery),
  • shrinking large turbinates (turbinate reduction),
  • straightening a crooked septum (septoplasty),
  • valve surgery (placing cartilage grafts to stabilize the breathing passage).

Rhinoplasty, In Depth:

In recent years, rhinoplasty has become one of the most popular facial plastic surgical procedures. Many people are unhappy with the nose they were born with, while others have had the shape of the nose distorted from an injury. Disorders of nasal breathing and sinusitis often complicate the situation. A range of techniques are used to fully address the desired change in appearance as well as to improve nasal breathing and correct chronic sinus infections. Sinus surgery, if indicated, is done with endoscopes to avoid any visible incisions.

Usually, the goal of rhinoplasty is to achieve better harmony between other facial features and the the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery does this by improving the size and shape of the nose. Specially, rhinoplasty can change the shape of the nasal tip, remove a hump, and straighten the nose. The size and shape of the nostrils can be changed. Rhinoplasty may be performed under general or sedation anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Most health insurance plans still provide some coverage for functional nasal surgery and sinus surgery.

Rhinoplasty: Questions & Answers

What does a Rhinoplasty procedure cost?

Rhinoplasty can range from $4000 to $15000, and depends on the surgeon experience/skill, what geographic area the surgery will be in, and what work needs to be done on the nose. Depending on the patients insurance functional components (septum, sinuses etc) may be covered. Since Revision Rhinoplasties are more difficult they tend to be more than primary surgeries.

As you make a decision to proceed with Rhinoplasty keep in mind 3 thing?
1. It is your face, never compromise on quality!
2. Is your surgeon experienced and do they have a proven record of creating beautiful noses.
3. Do you have any breathing or sinus issues? It doesn’t make sense to have a great looking nose that doesn’t function properly.

How long is Rhinoplasty recovery time?

“80% of your swelling will be gone in 2 week, and 90% at 2 months.”

Downtime
1. For the first week we have patients wear a protective nose splint. Early removal of the split increases the risk of the nose not setting correctly, or may damage the delicate healing tissues.
2. For the first 2 weeks the casual observer, and family and friends, will be able tell you had nose surgery.
3. Bruising is usually resolved within 2 week, but varies by the patient bleeding tendency. We recommend Arnica gel.

Complete Recovery
Complete resolution of all the swelling can take up to 1 year (most of which is gone in 2 months). We follow up with patients until the healing is complete and patients have their final nose.

How can an upturned nose be corrected?

Depending on the patient, this may be best addressed by trimming a portion of the columella to decrease the columellar show and adding cartilage in order to weight down the tip and rotate the tip downwards.
